“He rested the whole day [Wednesday] and has been icing his arm and getting treatment so that he can open the batting for us tomorrow [Thursday],” Harbhajan Singh told the media on Wednesday evening.

“He is fit to bat in the second innings but he is going to miss out on the one-day series.”

India play a Twenty20 international against South Africa on January 9 at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban followed by a five-match ODI series starting on January 12.

Gambhir missed the second Test in Durban after he had been hit on the knuckles of his left hand in the first Test.

His injury was compounded when he was hit on the left elbow by a Lonwabo Tsostsobe delivery in the first innings at Newlands. He made 93 in that innings and received the blow when he was on 91.

He was not on the field for the duration of South Africa’s second innings where he could be seen sitting in the dressing room with a splint on his arm during the fourth day.

The left-handed batsman will return to India to recover in time for the ICC World Cup which starts next month on the sub-continent.

Gambhir captained India in the recent ODI series against New Zealand, while MS Dhoni was being rested, and not only won the series 5-0 but scored consecutive centuries in the first two matches.

No immediate replacement has been named but it is expected that Murali Vijay will stay on and take his place as he did in the second Test in Durban.
